Why is it so hard to write? Because it is.

Developing a Rhythm and Practice of Writing - Part 2

I have discovered three reasons why writing has not been a consistent practice for me.

  1. Because it is hard
  2. Because I am insecure
  3. Because there is an enemy

WE DON’T WRITE BECAUSE IT’S HARD.

We want to be physically healthy, but we don’t exercise or eat well. In the same way, we want to think clearly but we don’t write. Both take effort, energy, and discipline.

However, if we exercise and write consistently, would we not gain greater energy and effort to develop greater discipline?

Instead, we procrastinate by overthinking. We want to do it perfectly or not do it at all. The standard we set becomes the excuse to not even try.

It’s time to try. Simply start writing. Do it for a week and build the momentum to keep going for the rest of the month.

After a month, share what you have written with others. Sharing is the critical component to building a writing practice because they will hold us accountable.

It’s hard work to think clearly. But the ability to think clearly and communicate that clarity will change your life.

“Writing is thinking. To write well is to think clearly. That’s why it’s so hard.”
