Why is it so hard to write? Because we are insecure

Developing a Rhythm and Practice of Writing - Part 3

I have discovered three reasons why writing has not been a consistent practice for me. In this post, I will cover the second reason.

  1. Because it is hard
  2. Because I am insecure
  3. Because there is an enemy

WE DON’T WRITE BECAUSE WE ARE INSECURE.

We’re insecure about the quality of our writing. I know I struggle with grammar, word choice, and run-on sentences. I know I struggle with being clear, concise, or congruent. And yet, I write. It’s the only way I know how to improve.

We’re insecure about the content of our writing. The fear of being held accountable to your current thinking in the future keeps us from writing. And yet, the ability and willingness to say I was wrong or I have changed my view is not a sign of weakness but of strength. I trust learners rather than the “know-it-alls.”

Our logos and egos get in the way.

With the rise of “personal brand” and “transactional culture”, the metrics and contributions of our lives are measured by likes, clicks, and shares — by how people respond to it.

We can also add the metric of “invitations” to podcasts, webinars, conferences, and livestreams—as well as the “marketability” of your content, “influencer” revenue or online course and membership signups. This is how the world measures “worth”.

Humans are communal beings. We have a need to be needed and a want to be wanted. So I can understand how our output and influence became our measurement of worth.

However, we all know those are lacking and counterfeit.

Who we are determines our worth, not what we do.

So let’s keep writing.

This entry is for Month-long writing challenge for our The Beautiful Future Members. Every weekday, we write and share with one another to build and strengthen our practice of writing.
